Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) was a Spanish novelist and playwright. Cervantes lived a rich life that included exile in Rome, service in the Spanish naval forces, captivity as a result of that service, and imprisonment for his work as a tax collector. It was in prison that he claimed he was inspired to create the character of Don Quixote and write the two books that have defined his legacy and that stand as classics of Western literature to this day. According to the Encyclopaedia Brittanica, his defining work has been translated into over 60 languages.
