Fanny Hill Imagery

London

At her first sight of the capital, Fanny was fascinated by charms and beauty of the city: “It was pretty late in a summer evening when we reached the town, in our slow conveyance, though drawn by six at length. As we passed through the greatest streets that led to our inn, the noise, of the coaches, the hurry, the crowds of foot passengers, in short, the new scenery of the shops and houses, at once pleased and amazed me.” The author’s attention to the city and Fanny’s reaction to it is not accidental, as London is sometimes depicted as a beast which swallows such young and unsophisticated creatures as Fanny.

Beauty

The narrator provides the narration with descriptions of people she met, one of such images is given of one of the brothel’s girls Emily: “a girl fair to excess, and whose limbs were, if possible, too well made, since their plump fulness was rather to the prejudice of that delicate slimness required by the nicer judges of beauty; her eyes were blue, and streamed inexpressible sweetness, and nothing could be prettier than her mouth and lips, which closed over a range of the evenest and whitest teeth.” Personal beauty is important for girls whose profession is apparently to provide sexual pleasure.

Party

The clients of Mrs. Coles’ brothel organized different parties, where the girls were invited. These parties were not for big public as contained scenes of sexual acts in front of the rest guests. The number of girls answered the number of men, so everything was fair. One such party Fanny describes: “Every thing being settled, and it being a fine summer day, but rather of the warmest, we set out after dinner; where, landing at the foot of a neat, joyous pavilion, Emily and I were handed into it by our esquires, and there drank tea with a cheerfulness and gaiety, that the beauty of the prospect, the serenity of the weather, and the tender politeness of our sprightly gallants, naturally led us into.” Later they all bathed in the river, and enjoyed each other in every possible way their profession offered.
