Comparison of a Cinematic Adaptation

Objective:

Students will compare and contrast scenes from a cinematic adaptation of the play with the text.

Structure:

In 2016, Denzel Washington produced, directed and starred in a cinematic adaptation of Fences. You can access a playlist of ten clips from the film here, on the Fandango Movie Clips YouTube channel. Choose several of these scenes to watch with your students in class. As you watch, have students follow along in their books. Ask students to analyze these clips in light of what they see in the text:
