Kind of Activity:

Group Work

Objective:

Students will produce Mind Maps that aggregate information having to do with key themes in the work.

Structure:

Provide students with unlined paper of some kind (e.g., printer paper, some form of construction paper) as well as colored pencils or markers or just pencils. Using the definitions offered in the "Introduction of the Novel" section of this Lesson Plan, ask students to briefly discuss the major themes of the work:

Black American Experience
The American Dream
Love and Responsibility

Afterward, using a SmartBoard or other projecting tool, watch this tutorial on Mind Maps. Then, break the students up into groups...
