How was New York, and especially Greenwich Village, different for Alison in 1976 than it had been when she was younger?
Alison was suddenly able to see gay culture and gay people everywhere. The feeling seemed to echo in her. She saw gay men in the Village, gay life portrayed in the musical A Chorus Line, met a gay couple. However, the Village also showed an underbelly, as with the "chickenhawk" who pursued Alison's brother John, something Alison now sees as connected to her own father's behavior.
