Alison Bechdel was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania in 1960. She spent her childhood in Beech Creek, Pennsylvania with her younger brothers, Christian and John, her mother, Helen, and her father, Bruce. Both of her parents were high school English teachers; Bruce, her father, also ran the Bechdel family funeral home. The family tended to be somewhat isolated and distant, a fact that Bechdel, as she wrote in her graphic memoir Fun Home, believed to be related to her father's status as a closeted gay man.
