    What is the purpose of the back and forth Felix does with his students at the correctional center about The Tempest?

    Atwood knows she cannot assume that readers coming to Hag-Seed will have read the original play The Tempest. She also cannot assume that readers have any real familiarity with Shakespeare. The purpose of this part is to not only give readers background on the plot and characters of The Tempest but to also introduce themes. Atwood is able to do some entertaining literary analysis here through Felix which helps deepen the reader’s motivation to keep going through Hag-Seed. Without doing this, Atwood would risk alienating her readers.
