Objective:

Students will acknowledge myths and misconceptions they've heard about Africa.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.9-10.1, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.9

Structure:

Give students an unlabeled map of Africa. Ask them to fill it in to the best of their abilities. They need not stress; this will not be graded.

As a class, brainstorm what students think they know about Africa. To kickstart the brainstorming, teachers can ask specific questions: How big is Africa? How many people live there? What language(s) do they speak? The teacher can keep track of students’ answers on the white board or...
