Do you think Tom Allan punishes Ness? Why or why not?
Readers may hope that Tom Allan doesn't punish Ness. He is considered a good master, and no one wants to think about the character being beaten or whipped like she was before. Realistically, though, it is very likely that she was. Even "good" slave owners are still people who own other human beings and need to find a way to keep them in line. Ness humiliated and even knocked down Tom Allan's child in front of other slaves. It is unlikely she would escape punishment.
