Hood Feminism Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Feminism

Kendall questions what feminism in recent history actually symbolizes. Although it is often thought to support all women inclusively, Kendall shows that feminism often excludes certain women from the narrative.

Racism

Kendall cites racism as a cause of women of color's exclusivity from mainstream feminism. This is a key motif of the text, and something she explores in depth.

Poverty

Poverty, according to Kendall, should be a key concern for feminists. However, she argues that this is often not considered or analyzed in much depth, and is not considered a priority.

Basic needs

In this text, Kendall frequently talks about basic needs. She argues that black women are often criticized or blamed when asking for basic needs and that this is an issue overlooked by feminist leaders.

Ideology

Kendall argues that people's differing ideologies, including attitudes about women and racial ideologies, cloud people's judgments when considering feminism. For example, she argues that many feminists are judgmental about sex workers when feminism should really support them.
