After the publication of Incantations and Other Stories, Appachana wrote a novel called Listening Now, about six women in Bangalore, Delhi, and Lucknow. Other contemporary Indian authors include: Jhumpa Lahiri, author of The Namesake and the Pulitzer Prize winner The Interpreter of Maladies; Salman Rushdie, author of The Satanic Verses and Midnight's Children; and Arundhati Roy, author of the Booker Prize winner The God of Small Things.
