Indian Horse was published in 2012 to great acclaim. The novel is narrated by Saul Indian Horse, an Ojibway boy who is separated from his family and forced into Canada's church-led residential school system at eight years old. The coming-of-age narration is mixed with a rich account of the hockey world as well as historical details about the horrors of the residential school system. The story offers a grim and realistic depiction of both institutional cruelty and individual racism while speaking to the power of community in facing these injustices and reclaiming one's past. The novel is widely considered to be Wagamese's best work.
