Why is the narrator uncomfortable when the glass barrier between him and Ishmael is eliminated?
The narrator is now aware of how near and enormous Ishmael is. At one point, Ishmael shifts “his mountainous bulk” into a new position. The narrator must be aware of how potentially dangerous Ishmael is. He wonders what a stranger would think if he walked in on the two. The narrator also observes a wary look in Ishmael’s eye that leads him to believe that Ishmael also is troubled by their close proximity.
