Notes to the Teacher

Before beginning the lesson, prepare students for reading Ishmael by discussing the structure of the book. Let students know that this is not a typical plot-driven novel with lots of action. Instead, it is a philosophical dialog between two characters. The idea of a telepathic gorilla can be an obstacle for some readers. Encourage students not to focus on how or why a gorilla can communicate telepathically and simply to accept the premise.
