Daniel Quinn followed Ishmael with the books The Story of B and My Ishmael, creating a loose trilogy. Story of B (1996) continues the philosophical and religious exploration begun in Ishmael. In My Ishmael: A Sequel (1997) readers learn that, unbeknownst to the narrator of Ishmael, Ishmael was working with another pupil, a 12-year-old girl. Quinn discusses how he developed the ideas in Ishmael in his autobiography, Providence: The Story of a Fifty-Year Vision Quest. His nonfiction book Beyond Civilization (2000) is a more practical approach to the vision he lays out in Ishmael.
