    What is the significance of the attack on Chingachgook the night after the massacre?

    While the reader has become preoccupied with seeing the Huron as the main enemy of our protagonists, Cooper uses this opportunity to remind us that there are still many tribes with different and complicated alliances. It is revealed that the attacker is an Oneida, a tribe that was once related to the Mohicans. They are allied with the British, but that does not make them friendly to all those that are. Heyward points out that if Hawkeye had killed him it would have been in violation of the treaty, a concern that Hawkeye dismisses.
