How has David's usefulness transformed by the end of the book?
David's role in the early parts of the narrative are mostly to balance out the seriousness of the adventure with comic relief. He is a somewhat goofy character with no real skills outside of singing. He himself has to be rescued several times. But by the time Hawkeye is rescuing Uncas from the Huron village, David has become and invaluable asset, and shows remarkable bravery.
