The Last of the Mohicans is by far James Fenimore Cooper's most popular novel. It is the second in the series called The Leatherstocking Tales, which all feature the protagonist Natty Bumppo, or as he's called in this book, Hawkeye. Taking place in the third year of the French and Indian War, The last of the Mohicans uses the conflict between the French and British as a backdrop and launching point for its narrative.
