Why is Lucy confused by Mariah's assertion, " I have Indian blood"?

Lucy is confused by this statement because she does not understand how this is relevant to her ability to cook fish or any of their current interactions. However, it is clear that by saying she has "Indian blood," Mariah is trying to insinuate that like Indians, she, too, can catch and prepare fish.
