Why does Lucy have such a disdain for her childhood and home?
Students should reflect on the overall chapter, in particular Lucy's discussion of her island. For example, she states, "I was born and grew up in a place that did not seem to be influenced by the tilt of the earth at all; it had only one season--sunny, drought ridden. And what was the effect on me of growing up in such a place? I did not have a sunny disposition...I had been experiencing a long drought." Students should consider what she means by describing her disposition as a "long drought." Discussions engaging themes of mental health and longing would also strengthen conversation.
