Act II
II.i: Banquo and his son, Fleance, are out at night, guarding Macbeth’s house. Macbeth comes to join them; Banquo tells him that he dreamed of the witches the previous night. Macbeth tells Fleance and Banquo they should go to bed, then braces himself to kill Duncan. As a bell rings, he exits to commit the deed.
II.ii: Lady Macbeth waits, mentioning that she has drugged the grooms who share the bedchamber with Duncan. Macbeth arrives and announces that he has committed the murder; he feels guilty and uncertain, puzzled that he was unable to pronounce the word "Amen" when others did so in their sleep.
