Magnolia Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Box 82

Officer Kurring has a dating service set up for himself that we see and hear him listening to in the beginning of the film. His dating service is a symbol that he desires to find love and be in a relationship.

No Backup

Kurring is seen entering Marcie's apartment alone with no backup. Him riding alone on patrol is a symbol that he doesn't have the support he needs in his life, just like in his career.

Rain

Just a short interval into the film it begins to rain, and this is in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley where rain is a rarity. This is a symbol that this is not a normal day, it is one where everything is heightened.

Linda's Cuts

Anderson uses quick, slashing cuts with Julianne Moore's character Linda while introducing her. This is a symbol of Linda's emotional state being frantic and chaotic.

Tossing Coffee

Claudia gives Officer Kurring a cup of coffee, as he asked for one from her in order to talk with her longer. When she leaves the room, he tosses the coffee. It is a symbol that he doesn't want coffee, but that he wants to spend time with Claudia as he's interested in her.
