The source of Miles’ nightmares refers to his challenges and experiences. Miles lives two separate lives, which has complicated his existence. On the one hand, Miles is an ordinary child going around his businesses, such as going to school and playing with friends. On the other hand, Miles is a superhero or a Spider-Man with unique abilities. Consequently, in Miles' nightmares, he finds it paradoxical that it turns out to be illegal when he makes a decision. For instance, when Miles decides to sneak out of school to help his friend, he gets suspended for some time. However, Miles thinks that the school misunderstands his decision to sneak.
The metaphor of the web
The web metaphorically means that Miles is not alone because family and friends surround him. The web represents the family tree that is within Miles' reach. However, Miles' confusion about life makes him think he is alone. The librarian suggests the web's symbolism when Miles goes to the library to inquire about spiders. Therefore, Miles is integral to his family and community. For instance, after he is suspended from school, he realizes that his parents support him till the day he finishes his punishment.
"You are just like me."
While conversing with his Uncle Aaron, he tells Miles they are just alike because they share family blood and attributes. However, this confession throws Miles further into confusion because he knows well that his Uncle is a criminal who does not care about his consequences to the family. Whenever his Uncle's voice haunts Miles, he commits criminal activities. For instance, when Miles is in his supernatural form, he beats a sneaker man and injures him badly, and all this while, he comforts himself that he is a criminal like his Uncle.
