Harriet Beecher Stowe's famous book Uncle Tom's Cabin was published a few years after Douglass's narrative. Though it was a fictional account of slavery, it possibly had an even bigger impact than Douglass's narrative, and it gave further definition to the social cleavages that eventually resulted in the American Civil War.
Published at roughly the same time, Solomon Northup's memoir 12 Years a Slave details how the author, a black freeman, was kidnapped and sold into slavery. An award-winning film adaptation was made in 2013.
