    What effect does the twist at the beginning of the play have on the audience?

    At the beginning of the play, it is revealed that Robert has in fact been dead for a week; Catherine’s conversation with her father has taken place within her mind. This twist catches the audience off guard, blurs the line between reality and fantasy, and makes the audience doubt everything they’ve witnessed in the play so far. It also leads the audience to doubt Catherine’s sanity, a major theme throughout the play.
