    What gives each of the characters hope and inspires them to keep going?

    Students should discuss their interpretations of each character's sources of hope and/or drive. For example, Florian wants revenge on Dr. Lange and hates the Nazis - he has a mission and will do anything to complete it. Joana wants to help people, and won’t leave anyone behind. She hopes to be reunited with her mother, who might still be alive. Emilia lives in a dream world composed of her memories of happier times: she longs for her dead mother and peaceful, idyllic life in Poland. She longs to be reunited with August.
