    Discuss students’ emotional reactions to the horrific descriptions of suffering and death. Were these hard to read? Were they unexpected?

    The scenes of panic and death as the Gustloff sinks are overwhelming and brutal, and should be discussed with consideration and sensitivity, while making room for the different ways students may react to this difficult subject matter. This question should give students a bit of time to process and reflect as a group.
