Chapter 1
18-year-old Caroline Meeber takes the train from her home in Columbia City, Wisconsin to her sister Minnie's house in Chicago, where she hopes to begin a new life in the new city. She catches the attention of a traveling salesman called Charles Drouet, who introduces himself as a charming and worldly man, happy to show her the city. Although Carrie declines, she does give Drouet her sister's address and agrees to let him watch at a distance when she arrives, to ensure that she safely meets up with her sister. When Drouet sees Carrie greet Minnie, he gives her a nod and slips away.
