Chapter 41
Hurstwood starts his job at the trolley and immediately encounters resistance. Striking workers attack him, he doesn’t receive much support from management, and he struggles to learn how to drive the trolley. At the end of his first day, he stays in town and sleeps in a room shared by several other new employees. The next day, he gets attacked more as he drives the trolley around and even gets scratched by a bullet shot at him. He finally trudges through the snow and makes it back to his apartment, where he decides that he’s done with that job.
