Speaking in Tongues Background

Speaking in Tongues is a play by Andrew Bovell that debuted in Sydney, Australia in 1996. It was produced by Griffin Theater Company at The SBW Stables. The play was adapted into an award-winning and commercially successful feature film titled Lantana. It was released in 2001 and Bovell also wrote the script. The script of the play was published in 2003 by Nick Hern Books. It won the AWGIE Stage Award of 1997. The play has been performed all over Europe and America.

The play explores the lives of nine people, connected by the acts of infidelity between two couples and how it adversely affects the lives of those people. These acts reveal the darkness in human nature that we often tend to overlook.

Speaking in Tongues is brilliantly written as Bovell offers the reader moments that they never expected. The tension and mystery are sustainability maintained throughout. The play is also full of humor and fun. It is a complex play that challenges the very nature of a theatrical play. The connection between characters is detailed and intentional, always leaving the reader in suspense and awe. It offers an unfiltered look into a matrimonial setting.
