Chapter 1 - Section 1.1 - Real Numbers - 1.1 Exercises - Page 10: 6

Answer

a.) Yes b.) Yes

Work Step by Step

a.) The answer to the sum of any rational number will always equal a rational number since no irrational forms will appear Ex.) $\frac{1}{2}$ + $\frac{2}{2}$ = $\frac{3}{2}$ [$\frac{2}{2}$ is the same as 1] Fractions and whole numbers are rational numbers and the answer still equals a fraction. b.) The sum of 2+ irrational numbers is still irrational numbers. Ex.) $\sqrt 2$ + $\sqrt 2$ = 2 $\sqrt 2$ We are only adding the two irrational stars so there is still a square root in the sum making it irrational.
