Chapter 18 - Temperature, Heat, and the First Law of Thermodynamics - Questions - Page 540: 10

Answer

Solid Cube > Solid Hemisphere > Solid Sphere. We begin by calculating the surface area-to-volume ratio for each of the three objects.

Work Step by Step

All three objects are made of the same material. They are maintained at 300K, and the outside temperature is also 350K. Thus, only surface area affects the rate of thermal radiation transfer (more accurately it is the surface area-to-volume ratio). The higher the ratio, the higher the thermal radiation transfer rate. For a higher ratio, radiation in unit volume gets more surface area to pass through. From our calculations, we see for the cube this ratio is highest, then comes the hemisphere, and at last the sphere. The rank is: Solid cube> Solid hemisphere> Solid sphere.
