Question: What is Edmond Dantes’ major flaw?
Dantes is naïve and overly quick to trust others – he assumes that his colleagues, neighbors, and acquaintances will behave as honorably toward him as he does towards them. He believes this even as he witnesses Danglars’ hate, Caderousse’s greed, and Fernand’s jealousy. As a result, he falls easily into his enemies’ trap.
Students might not find the answer to this question immediately obvious, since Dantes is presented as an extremely positive character. If they struggle with the question, ask them to think about why it was so easy for Danglars and the others to destroy Dantes.
