The Three Musketeers: Like The Count of Monte Cristo, this series of adventure novels by Alexandre Dumas feature action-packed, fast-paced stories, larger-than-life characters, and a picturesque French setting. 

Les Miserables: This classic novel, authored by Victor Hugo, is also set in 19th-century France. Like The Count of Monte Cristo, it spans decades and traces the lives of a former convict, his nemesis, and the young people for whom he becomes a father figure. Les Miserables is denser and more serious than The Count of Monte Cristo - the dramatic action is tempered by interludes of history, philosophy, background, and detailed description.
