    Language and Symbolism in I[The Great Gatsby]

    Kind of Activity:

    Group Discussion

    Objective:

    To analyze the language and symbolism employed by Fitzgerald in the novel.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.L.5 ; CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.4

    Structure:

    Ask the students to come to class prepared with one or two of their favorite quotes or passages from the novel thus far. Specify that they should choose these quotes not based purely on content or sentiment, but on aspects of Fitzgerald's language that strike them as particularly imaginative, surprising, or beautiful.
