Paul remembers working as a death row supervisor on the E Block of the Cold Mountain Penitentiary where, by 1932, he had overseen seventy-eight executions. During that time, he had developed what he thought was a clear understanding of the mindset of the people who end up there. They may joke and put on a front before their execution, but by the time they get to "Old Sparky," they grow more serious and repentant.
And yet, Paul is not sure that any of them can truly repent. He recalls a murderer who was eventually set free from the E Block. After her death, Paul learned that she became a kindly librarian....
