I pray God will curse the writer, as the writer has cursed the world with this beautiful, stupendous, terrible in its simplicity, irresistible in its truth – a world that now trembles before the King in Yellow.
The King in Yellow changed Hilfred’s world for ever. He was so scared to finish the book that he threw it into the fire once. However, before the book could be seriously damaged, he managed to save it. That was the true power of forbidden knowledge. He finished the book and now hopes that “God God will curse the writer, as the writer has cursed the world with this beautiful, stupendous, terrible in its simplicity, irresistible in its truth”. There is no way he can get back purity and innocence of his soul after reading this book, for it has poisoned his mind.
The mask of self-deception was no longer a mask for me, it was a part of me.
It is always difficult to choose between love and friendship, especially if one values both. Although Alec loves Genevieve sincerely, he can’t betray his friend. To hide his true feelings, he learns how to tame his love, he says that “the mask of self-deception” becomes “a part of me” and he means that. The day when he finds out that neither Boris nor Genevieve is alive becomes the day when his mask falls off his face and he mourns for his lost love and friendship.
I have not a care of my own. but I am more restless than if I had.
Jack loved Boris and Genevieve too and it took him a lot of time to get used to an idea that they died. Later on, when his pain and sadness pass, Jack starts living a quiet life. Unfortunately, this bliss doesn’t last for long. He writes, “I have not a care of my own. but I am more restless than if I had”. This feeling of unease drives Jack crazy, makes him constantly wonder what can possibly go wrong. Not only Jack but reader too becomes more and more restless with every new page. Even when there are descriptions of horrible events, readers feel restless.
