    At what historical event does The Man in the High Castle diverge from real history? Why do you think Dick might have chosen this particular event as the point at which to diverge from history?

    We are told through the presence of the novel-within-a-novel (The Grasshopper Lies Heavy) that in The Man in the High Castle, Franklin D. Roosevelt was successfully assassinated by Giuseppe "Joe" Zangara, whereas in real life the assassination attempt failed. Dick may have chosen this moment to demonstrate the butterfly effect: that one bullet could have changed the entire course of history.
