While at her house, Juliana is the one with more control and power in the relationship. Juliana still fears Joe, who is alternately charming and frightening, but it is her home and her town. However, when they leave, power shifts to Joe. He insists on driving, though it is her car, and he provides the money for the trip. She is unafraid to tell him to leave her alone and let her read, but he holds more control once they have left Canon City. He is also manipulating the situation by allowing her to be the one to suggest that they visit Abendsen, despite the fact that it was his plan all along to do so.
