In order to fully appreciate The Man in the High Castle as a work in the alternative history genre, it is important for students to know the real history of the same time period. Students should be encouraged to do independent research, both through traditional means and online. There are several real historical figures who carry on in the fictional history and several real events which are alluded to in the fictional portions of the novel. Students should be encouraged to rigorously cross-section the true and fictional elements, and identify where fictional elements are allegorical for the real.
