    Ignorance vs. Knowledge

    Kind of Activity:

    Group Work

    Objective:

    To think about the recurring theme of knowledge vs. ignorance

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.5, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2

    Structure:

    Students will split into small groups of 3-6 students. Point out that in the novel, knowledge or pursuit of knowledge can be dangerous, resulting in Tara’s death and harming the wizard in the tree. However, ignorance can also be dangerous, as indicated by Chandresh and the many circus performers who are not given the chance to stay away from the competition. Thiessen, a reader stand-in, says, “I prefer to remain unenlightened, to better appreciate the dark.”...
