The Sun Also Rises serves as an emblem of what Gertrude Stein referred to as the "Lost Generation." After World War I, many young Americans left their country looking for opportunity abroad. A circle of artistic expatriates, including Hemingway, F. Scott Fiztgerald, and Ezra Pound, found guidance with Stein, and eventually came to define Modernism in literature and the visual arts.
