Before reading, students should be prepared to encounter some instances of dated language. For instance, Flora Baumbach's daughter is described as "retarded" and "Mongoloid." Most students will be aware that these terms are inappropriate today, but it should be explained before reading and reiterated after reading that the terms in use today are "disabled" and "Down's Syndrome."
