The White Helmets Irony

The White Helmets Irony

Mohammed Farah

When we meet Mohammad, he tells us that he had previously fought for the opposition for an armed group. However, despite his position he joined The White Helmets. He says that "I saw that the regime's campaign was targeting civilian. And I thought, "It is better to do humanitarian work than to be armed."

The White Helmets

Although extreme destruction has been caused to their city, The White Helmets do not discriminate when rescuing people. Abu Omar says "any human being, no matter who they are, or which side they're on... it's our duty to save them."

The Regime

Mohammad tells us that the regime says they are fighting ISIS and terrorists. However, he says that instead they are "targetting civilians," and that civilians are ultimately the ones who suffer as a result of bomb attacks. As such, although the regime has a duty towards its civilians to protect them, they are actually harming and killing them. Some attacks are even targeted at schools and hospitals.
