The voluminous bundle (simile)
The voluminous bundle is likened to a murder scene. The narrator says, "Lucky finally noticed the voluminous bundle of red fabric spilling across the bed like a murder scene, its edges trimmed in every hue the rainbow could throw up." The simile is a significant symbol of Lucky's transition into womanhood. For the first time, she sees her period.
Goddess statue (Simile)
Arnya's significance in Lucky's life is compared to a goddess. The narrator says, "Arnya bent to lift a swath, throwing an arm out for balance, looking like a goddess statue in a fountain of cherry Kool-kid." The love and support of a mother is immeasurable. For Lucky, her mother is a goddess.
A drying flower (Simile)
Whenever Lucky and her mother go to different places, they are seen as very close to each other. Arnya has the tendency to hold Lucky close to her. The narrator writes, "Arnya curled into her daughter like a drying flower, the whiskey congealing into sleep." The simile is significant because the reader learns that before Arnya's death, she did her part as a mother, and her biggest gift to her daughter was affection.
