Communicative Engineering

What are the unique qualities of Northwestern - and of the specific undergraduate school(s) to which you are applying - that make you want to attend the University? In what ways do you hope to take advantage of the qualities you have identified?


When a converter fails to transform its digital signals to analog commands for the effectors, the robot is as good as immobile. Similarly, without leadership and effective communication, even a group of capable engineers can be ineffectual. With my engineering/communications dual degree at Northwestern, I hope to become a leader of engineering projects who can cooperate, collaborate, and communicate effectively with others.

Within the Northwestern School of Communication, I hope to take advantage of courses that can hone my debate skills like “Theories of Argumentation” while furthering my debate career by capitalizing on opportunities in student associations. For instance, participating in the largest intercollegiate debate competition in America, the Owen L. Coon Memorial Debate Tournament, will no longer be a remote fantasy since it is hosted on campus by Northwestern’s debate society! As the prior Taiwanese national debate champion, I hope to contribute international perspectives and experiences while learning from the rigorous training and unique opportunities to mature as a student and as an intellectual at Northwestern.
