Why Northwestern

While other parts of your application give us a sense of who you are, we are also excited to hear more about how you see yourself engaging with the larger Northwestern community. In 300 words or less, help us understand how you might engage specific resources, opportunities, and/or communities here. We are curious about what these specifics are, as well as how they may enrich your time at Northwestern and beyond.


From a future French Prime Minister’s daring escape from the Paris Commune to a Nepalese prince’s massacre of his royal family, History has allowed me to discover unexpected stories that have shaped the world today. This exploration is exactly what I hope to continue in Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

The “Northwestern Mindset” of interdisciplinary learning and global engagement would broaden my History studies beyond the usual essays on wars or politicking. While fulfilling my Social and Behavioural Sciences distribution requirement, for instance, I could complement my studies of historical figures by learning how communication shaped their thinking in “Language and Cognition.” This would combine with the quarter system that would give me extra courses over four years to push the boundaries of my academic comfort zone. The Kaplan Scholars Program, meanwhile, would challenge me to examine open-ended questions like “Can fiction be a form of knowing?” through the lens of disciplines from across the humanities. The program’s course “Revolutions: Visualizing Radicalism” would allow me to incorporate Hispanic and Russian film, literature and art into my existing interest in political history.
