Inequality Awareness: Part 1

Objective:

To draw connections between Panem and the real world

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.7, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.1

Structure:

Divide students into groups. Assign each group a topic:

-Poverty

-Inequality

-Lack of freedom of speech

-Lack of freedom of movement

-Lack of protection from threats of violence

Each small group should discuss how those problems affect Panem, citing textual examples. How are the citizens of Panem unequal? Are they free to say and do what they want? How does the government impinge on their lives? Are they compensated fairly for work?
