Chapter 1
In the Swiss town of Vevey, an American man named Winterbourne is staying at the Trois Couronnes hotel. Many tourists, especially Americans, visit this town by Lake Geneva. Winterbourne, who's been living in Geneva since he was a kid, came to Vevey to see his aunt, Mrs. Costello. It's rumored he's dating an older woman in Geneva and that's why he stayed there after his studies.
One morning, Winterbourne is in the hotel garden when a young American boy with a stick comes up to him. The boy, Randolph, asks for some sugar, and Winterbourne gives him some. They chat about American candy and joke about how great Americans are. The...
