Does Chronology Matter?

Objective:
In this activity, students will dissect “Ysrael” and put it back together in different ways in order to understand the reasons for which authors structure texts non-chronologically and the effects this structure has on the reading experience.

Structure:
Part 1: 15 minutes
Students should break into groups of 3 or 4. Students should review the story, “Ysrael”, making note of when each numbered section is occurring. In the text, students should circle the temporal indicators (i.e. “the summer before” or “I’d seen Ysrael my first time the year before”). Then,...
